No…we don’t like portmanteau words any more than you do. We still baulk a bit at ‘brunch’ and we’re going nowhere near ‘shacket’! However, we have a small place in our heart for the coatigan since it’s just so…autumnal! Half-coat and half-cardigan, it’s the perfect transitional item and it comes in many different guises as you’ll see today as we pick out our five favourites.
Fluffy Blue Coatigan – £35 (was £50), QED London
QED London’s coatigan is fun, funky and puts us in mind of a ’70s pencil case with its fuzzy finish and electric blue hue. Made from super-soft-touch fake fur, this collarless piece fastens at the neckline with a hook and eye fastening and quite brilliantly has a zip all the way around the centre…which means you can enjoy it in two lengths! Versions in grey, black, pink, white and sky and navy blue are available as well as this cobalt version – and all of them are currently on sale at fifteen quid off the original price!
Penelope Coatigan in Navy and Grey – £111.20, Hobbs
Travel through autumn in style and don the Hobbs Penelope Coatigan which is made from a soft wool blend. A longline design, it has two generously-sized patch pockets and a simple open neckline. However, what sets it apart from the crowd is the fact it’s been divided into two – below the waist it’s grey and above the waist it’s navy blue, and this extends across the sleeves as well. This one will go just as well with jeans, T-shirt and trainers as it will over a formal frock, so dress it up and down as you please.
We can’t resist the large faux fur collar and matching cuffs of M&S’s Per Una coatigan. In a neutral shade of pale grey, this fine piece is made from an acrylic/polyester mix (with a bit of elastane thrown in for added stretch) and is fully lined. With a vertical ribbed texture and an oversized collar and cuffs, this coatigan is a quality garment and has a real sense of glamour about it – it’s another piece that could just as comfortably wear on the way to the office as you could on a night out on the town!
Tie Cuff Coatigan in Pink – £60, River Island
If you’re looking for a versatile piece of casual wear that you won’t want to take off this autumn, look no further than River Island’s coatigan which is a loose design in a very muted shade of pink. With two large patch pockets, it has an open front and its hem rests at about thigh height. Its main design feature, though, is to be found on the cuffs, which have long ties on them to create a really distinctive look. The perfect piece to take you through the next couple of months in casual style.
Boucle Navy Blue Coatigan with Side Splits – £39, JD Williams
Already a bestseller, this bouclé coatigan from JD Williams is a made from a super-soft boucle material and has a simple design with an open front, long sleeves and splits to the sides for comfort and ease of movement. Longer than our other choices, this gorgeous garment falls to about knee length and is a perfect if you’re looking to add layers to an outfit or two. If you love the style but navy blue’s not your thing, this coatigan is also available in a black version – and at less than forty quid we might opt for both!
